Bird Food
So, should we ask Kaytee and other dometic bird food suppliers why there is so much crap in their food?
Just an old bird brain.
This is only 1 fifth of my birds diet, but I pay premium for empty shells, bird bisquits, ( what the heck are they anyway) they seem to make up all of a sudden about 40% of the bag, stems, some sort of clumps of processed fruits. I feel like they take this stuff off of the floors of plants who deal with seeds and nuts. They used to be reputable. Owners who have no clue could let their birds starve to death with this garbage.
Believe me, they’ve all got their pat answers. It’s the same with all pet foods. We, the consumers love our pets, so it’s hard for us to conceive of the idea that someone wouldn’t have their best interest at heart. But they don’t.
And now, we are so brain-washed into believing that pellets or kibble are the best diets for our pets. I agree that pellets are a far cry from the crappy seed-only diets that were pushed in the 70s and 80s, but it’s still a processed, manufactured product that has to be fortified with vitamins and minerals to make it balanced and nutritional.
I feed pellets (NOT Kaytee) but only as very small portion of the diet. I believe fresh, whole foods are best. For example, instead of feeding my birds a pellet that is fortified with Vitamin A, I feed them foods naturally high in Vitamin A and Beta Carotine.
I’m with you on this. I think what the pet food industry does is shameful. Unfortunately, most people don’t want to hear it. They want what’s easiest and cheapest, and if they think it’s always worked best one way, they won’t even consider an alternative.

EDIT: I hate to tell you this, but I’m sure they do take it off the floor. It’s a well-known fact that what they put into most dog and cat foods are the meats which are rejected for human consumption and tossed into a large pile on the floor. They even put in the ingredients list “mill sweepings.” Since this is true for other pet foods, I don’t see why it would be any different for bird “food.”
