Tropical Fish Aquarium Lighting
What do you need to set up a saltwater home aquarium?
well I’m planning on purchasing a couple clown fish and maybe some other tropical fish,
I know I need a tank and the fish, and the food
but what about filters,circulation, the salt water the lighting or the heating
I’m kinda confused can someone help me?
For a Fish only marine aquarium:
A good book on salt water aquariums read it and research anything you don’tunderstand before buying a system
A firm understanding of the nitrogen cycle
Supplies: I will be general here as There are many options. I have included very general and average costs for these supplies in US dollars.
Aquarium/stand…55 gallon or larger…$400- $500
Lights..with fish only probably an actinic bulb..which will fit in the light system that comes with your tank…this will have to be decided after you have read your book.
Filtration…. there are many options, my advice is a fluval 405, but there are some other choices…$250
Protien skimmer…once again many options…my choice is Prizm skimmers…$150-$250
1-2 200 gallon per hour power head pumps for circulation(optional)….$60
A jager heater for the size aquarium you pick.,,and a thermometer….$50
Marine salt for salt water aquariums….$50
A master testing kit(Ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, copper)…$50
hydrometer…$12
substrate(live sand..60 lbs for a 55 gallon)…$75
Misc decorations…base rock coral decorations…???
At this point not trying to confuse you more but it would be advisable to have some live rock even in a fish only tank…probably 45 pounds or so…..$125
Realize that this is a set up for fish…not efficient enough for invertebrates like shrimp, corals and crabs.
